Competition Information, Rules, & Guidelines

2014–PIANO

The Social Music Works International Video Upload Competition, in its inaugural year, will explore the global accessibility and community building of music making through the use of social media.

Applicants arenotrequired to travel to a physical audition site, freeing them to audition at the time most convenient for them. Travel expenses, transportation logistics, and time constraints are no longer barriers to entry, opening the competition field to participants worldwide!

The Competition is open toallapplicants who meet the age eligibility requirements. The 2014 Competition is limited toPIANO, but will expand to include more instruments and voice in future years.



Categories

There are three categories. Applicants may enter one, two, or all three categories. Applicants who enter more than one category are eligible for Special Multi-Genre Prizes.


CLASSICAL CATEGORY

Age Eligibility & Divisions

Age eligibility is based on the applicant’s age as of the preliminary video upload deadline for each category.Scan and receipt of a Proof-of-Age Document is required. Examples of Proof-of-Age Documents include:

Birth Certificate
Passport
Driver's License
Student I.D. with photo and birthdate


There are five age Divisions, as follows:

Division 5 (age 22 & under)
Division 4 (age 18 & under)
Division 3 (age 15 & under)
Division 2 (age 12 & under)
Division 1 (age 9 & under)


Division Cash Awards

Cash Awards will be presented to the First-Place Winner of each Division in each of the three Categories (Classical, Jazz, Variations). Additional Cash Awards may be presented as determined by the judging panel. Cash Awards are in USD $ and will be delivered either by check or wire transfer:

Division 5 (age 22 & under): USD $1,000
Division 4 (age 18 & under): USD $1,000
Division 3 (age 15 & under): USD $750
Division 2 (age 12 & under): USD $500
Division 1 (age 9 & under): USD $250


Special Multi-Genre Prizes

Social Music Works encourages multi-faceted music making and is proud to announce that outstanding applicants who participate in more than one of the three Categories (Classical, Jazz, Variations) are eligible for Special Multi-Genre Prizes (cash awards).

To be eligible, applicants must receive a minimum of 50 points in each of two categories; applicants who receive the minimum of 50 points in each of two categories will be considered for the Cross-Discipline Prize.Applicants who receive a minimum of 50 points in each of the three categories will be considered for the BRAVURA Prize.

Special Multi-Genre Prizes

Please Note:BRAVURA Prizewinners arenoteligible to also receive Cross-Discipline Prizes. In the case of points ties, cash award amounts may be redistributed.

In each Division, a Cross-Discipline Prize will be awarded to the eligible applicant with the highest point total across two categories, and a BRAVURA Prize will be awarded to the eligible applicant with the highest point total across three categories in the amount of USD $1 per point. (The cash award range for Cross-Discipline Prizes is USD $100–$1,000. The cash award range for BRAVURA Prizes is USD $150–$1,500).


Audience Choice Awards

All video uploads submitted by the Finalists in each Division of the three Categories (Classical, Jazz, Variations) will be featured on the Competition YouTube Channel and Website. Clips will be shared via various social media networks to promote the artistry of each applicant. Finalists will be eligible for various social media "Audience Choice Awards" (cash awards) ranging from USD $250–$1,000.


Repertoire, Fees, & Competition Rounds

CLASSICAL CATEGORY

Age Eligibility as of January 20, 2014.

  1. All repertoire must be MEMORIZED for each Round of the Classical Category.
  2. All repertoire must be performed on an acoustic piano (may be upright or grand).


PRELIMINARY ROUND

Application Fee: USD $20 NON-REFUNDABLE

Applicants will choose one (1) SOLO work from the following list:

  1. Baroque or Classical Era
  2. Romantic or Impressionist Era
  3. Contemporary Era

Please Note: for this Competition, Baroque and Classical are grouped as one Era, Romantic and Impressionist are grouped as one Era, and Contemporary is its own Era.

Work must be originally written for solo piano. No arrangements, transcriptions, or "easy versions" of repertoire. Exception: concert transcriptions; for example: Liszt's Rigoletto Paraphrase (Verdi).

Applicants must upload a video of a live performance of the work selected, NO CUTS or EDITS, between December 21, 2013 at 12:00 AM PDT and January 20, 2014 at 11:59 PM PST.


SEMI-FINAL ROUND

Application Fee USD $35 NON-REFUNDABLE

Up to twenty-five (25) Semi-Finalists will be selected for each Division.
Semi-Finalists will be announced on February 10, 2014.

Semi-finalists will add one (1) additional work from the repertoire list above, but the work selected must be from a different Era than the work submitted for the Preliminary Round.

Work must be originally written for solo piano. No arrangements, transcriptions, or "easy versions" of repertoire. Exception: concert transcriptions; for example: Liszt's Rigoletto Paraphrase (Verdi).

Finalists will add one (1) additional work from the repertoire list above, but the work selected must be from the remaining Era, not previously selected.

Work must be originally written for solo piano. No arrangements, transcriptions, or "easy versions" of repertoire. Exception: concert transcriptions; for example: Liszt's Rigoletto Paraphrase (Verdi).

JAZZ CATEGORY- (revised March 2014)

Age Eligibility as of May 25, 2014.

  1. NO repertoire needs to be memorized for any Round of the Jazz Category.
  2. Repertoire may be performed on an acoustic piano (upright or grand) or any type of electronic piano/keyboard.
  3. Repertoire may be performed solo or with a rhythm section (live or electronic).


PRELIMINARY ROUND

Application Fee: USD $20 NON-REFUNDABLE

Applicants will choose one (1) work from the following list:

  1. Blues Style
  2. Contrasting Style, including, but not limited to Swing, Bebop, Cool or Modal, Jazz-Rock Fusion, Latin, or other Ethnic Crossover Style
  3. Contrasting Stylenot previously chosen, including, but not limited to Swing, Bebop, Cool or Modal, Jazz-Rock Fusion, Latin, or other Ethnic Crossover StyleWork may be a Jazz Standard or a new composition.

Semi-Finalists will be announced on June 15, 2014.

Semi-finalists will add one (1) additional work from the repertoire list above, but the work selected must be from a different Style than the work submitted for the Preliminary Round. Work may be a Jazz Standard or a new composition.

Application Fee USD $50 NON-REFUNDABLE

Up to ten (10) Finalists will be selected for each Division.
Finalists will be announced on July 15, 2014.

Finalists will add one (1) additional work from the repertoire list above, but the work selected must be from the remaining Style, not previously selected.Work may be a Jazz Standard or a new composition.

VARIATIONS - (revised July & October 2014)

Age Eligibility as of November 15, 2014.

  1. NO repertoire needs to be memorized for any Round of the Variations Category.
  2. Repertoire may be performed on an acoustic piano (upright or grand) or any type of electronic piano/keyboard.
  3. Repertoire may be performed solo or with a rhythm section (live or electronic) andmay be in any musical style: Classical, Jazz, Rock, Pop, Country-Western, R&B, Fusion, etc.


PRELIMINARY ROUND

Application Fee: USD $20 NON-REFUNDABLE

Applicants will choose one (1) requirement from the following list:

  1. Variations on a given Melody
  2. Variations on a given Harmony or Bass Line
  3. Variations of a given Rhythm

Upon receipt of application materials, applicants will be given a choice of five (5) separate melody, harmony / bass line, and rhythm options representing a variety of musical styles (including jazz), from which they may freely chose.

Applicants must submit online application, scan of Proof-of-Age Document, and application fee by November 15, 2014 at 11:59 PM PST.

Applicants must upload a video of a live performance of the requirement selected, NO CUTS or EDITS, between November 16, 2014 and November 30, 2014.


SEMI-FINAL ROUND

Application Fee USD $35 NON-REFUNDABLE

Up to twenty-five (25) Semi-Finalists will be selected for each Division.
Semi-Finalists will be announced on December 5, 2014.

Semi-finalists will add one (1) additional requirement from the list above, but the requirement selected must be a different requirement than the one submitted for the Preliminary Round.

Semi-finalists must upload a video of a live performance of the new requirement selected, NO CUTS or EDITS byDecember 15, 2014 at 11:59 PM PST.

Semi-finalists may submit a replacement video of the same requirement selected for the Preliminary Round OR may keep the video originally submitted for the Preliminary Round.

All video uploads submitted by Semi-Finalists will be featured on the Competition YouTube Channel and Website. Clips will be shared via various social media networks to promote the artistry of each applicant.


FINAL ROUND

Application Fee USD $50 NON-REFUNDABLE

Up to ten (10) Finalists will be selected for each Division.
Finalists will be announced on January 5, 2015.

Finalists will add one (1) additional requirement from the list above, but the requirement selected must be the remaining requirement, not previously selected.

Finalists must upload a video of a live performance of the new requirement selected, NO CUTS or EDITS byJanuary 30, 2015 at 11:59 PM PST..

Finalists may submit a replacement video of the same requirement selected for the Preliminary Round and/or Semi-Final Round OR may keep the video originally submitted for the Preliminary Round and/or Semi-Final Round.

All video uploads submitted Finalists will be featured on the Competition YouTube Channel and Website. Clips will be shared via various social media networks to promote the artistry of each applicant.

As outlined above, Finalists will be eligible for various social media "Audience Choice Awards."

Winners will be announced no later than March 13, 2015 at 11:59 PM.


Additional Competition Information, Rules, & Guidelines

  1. 1st Place Winners of a Division are NOT ELIGIBLE to re-enter that Division in subsequent years. However, they may enter any higher Division as long as they meet the age requirement of that Division.
  2. NO APPLICATIONS OR VIDEO UPLOADS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THE DEADLINES POSTED.
  3. The decisions of the judging panel are final.
  4. Place-Winners must meet the standards of the judging panel; the judging panel is not obligated to select a winner for any/each Place in the Final Round of any/each Division in any/each of the three Categories (Classical, Jazz, Variations).
  5. Any applicant who at any time contacts a judge regarding this competition and/or its results will be immediately disqualified from this competition, and the applicant will not be eligible for any scholarships, prizes, or awards (cash or non-cash). In addition, the applicant will not be eligible to participate in any Social Music Works or BRAVURA innovations Events or Projects for the next two (2) years.
  6. Any parent/guardian who at any time contacts a judge regarding this competition and/or its results will have his/her child immediately disqualified from this competition, and the applicant will not be eligible for any scholarships, prizes, or awards (cash or non-cash). In addition, the applicant will not be eligible to participate in any Social Music Works or BRAVURA innovations Events or Projects for the next two (2) years.
  7. Any teacher who at any time contacts a judge regarding this competition and/or its results will have his/her student immediately disqualified from this competition, and the applicant will not be eligible for any scholarships, prizes, or awards (cash or non-cash). In addition, the applicant will not be eligible to participate in any Social Music Works or BRAVURA innovations Events or Projects for the next two (2) years.
  8. The submitted Social Music Works International Video Upload Competition Application Form & Competition Applicant Participation Agreement shall be deemed an acceptance and agreement of the applicant to the Competition Information, Rules, & Guidelines stated on this page.Semi-Finalists, Finalists, and Winners are subject to, including without limitation, to verification of age, eligibility, and compliance with these Official Rules.
  9. Winners (or their parents/guardians for Applicants age 17 or under, or age 18 or under in Alabama and Nebraska) will be required to complete, sign and return an Affidavit of Eligibility, Liability Release and, where lawful, Publicity Release within seven (7) days of the date notice was sent or Winner status may be forfeited and an alternate Winner may be selected.
  10. All winners are solely responsible for any taxes on their respective individual prizes.
  11. No substitution of prize will be offered, except at the sole discretion of Social Music Works, a division of BRAVURA innovations(herein known as "Competition Administrator").
  12. Prizes are non-transferable.
  13. If for any reason the Competition is not capable of running as planned, including without limitation, infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes which corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of the Competition, the Competition Administrator reserves the right, at its sole discretion to cancel, modify or terminate the Competition.
  14. Further, the Competition Administrator reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual deemed to be (a) tampering or attempting to tamper with the entry process or the operation of the Competition; (b) violating the Official Rules; or (c) acting in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner or with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any other person.
  15. Applicants agree that the Competition Administrator has the sole right to decide all matters and disputes arising from this Competition and that all decisions of Competition Administrator are final and binding.
  16. This Competition is governed by the laws of the State of California in the United States and, by entering, Applicants agree that all claims or disputes must be resolved exclusively in the state courts in Los Angeles County, California or the federal courts in Los Angeles, California.
  17. No liability or responsibility is assumed by the Competition Administrator resulting from any Applicant’s participation in or attempt to participate in the Competition or ability or inability to upload or download any information in connection with participating in the Competition.
  18. No responsibility or liability is assumed by the Competition Administrator for technical problems or technical malfunction arising in connection with any of the following occurrences which may affect the operation of the Competition: hardware or software errors; faulty computer, telephone, cable, satellite, network, electronic, wireless or internet connectivity, or other online communication problems; errors or limitations of any internet service providers, servers, hosts or providers; garbled, jumbled, or faulty data transmissions; failure of any e-mail transmissions to be sent or received; lost, late, delayed, or intercepted email transmissions; inaccessibility of the website in whole or in part for any reason; traffic congestion on the internet or the website; unauthorized human or non-human intervention in the operation of the Competition, including without limitation, unauthorized tampering, hacking, theft, virus, bugs, or worms; or destruction of any aspect of the Competition; or loss, miscount, misdirection, inaccessibility or unavailability of an e-mail account used in connection with the Competition.
  19. The Competition Administrator is not responsible for any typographical errors in the announcement of prizes or these Official Rules or any inaccurate or incorrect data contained on the website. Use of the website is at the Applicant’s own risk.
  20. Competition Administrator is not responsible for any personal injury or property damage or losses of any kind that may be sustained by the Applicant’s or any other person’s computer equipment resulting from participation in the Competition, use of the website or the download of any information from the website.
  21. By participating in the Competition, the Applicant releases Competition from any and all claims, damages or liabilities arising from or relating to such Applicant’s participation in the Competition.
  22. By accepting a prize in the Competition, winners agree that the Competition Administrator shall not be liable for any loss or injury resulting from participation in the Competition, acceptance or use of any prize.
  23. Competition Administrator is not liable in the event that any portion of the Competition is cancelled due to weather, fire, strike, acts of war or terrorism, or any other condition beyond their control.
  24. If an age division has fewer than five (5) applicants within a given category (classical, jazz, variations) of the International Video Upload Competition, Social Music Works has the right to cancel that division.Refunds will be given within 10 days ofcanceling a division due to not having enough applicants, with all affected applicants awarded points toward the "Multi-Genre Awards" point total.No cash prizes will be awarded for any canceled competition.(revised)
  25. In the event of any dispute, claim, question, or disagreement arising from or relating to the terms and conditions of this Competition or the Competition Agreement, or the breach thereof, Social Music Works, a division of BRAVURA innovations, LLC, shall use its best effort to settle the dispute, claim, question, or disagreement. To this effect, they shall consult and negotiate with each other in good faith, and recognizing their mutual interests, attempt to reach a just and equitable solution satisfactory to both parties. If they do not reach such solution within a period of sixty (60) days, then upon notice by either party to the other, all disputes, claims, questions, or differences shall be finally settled by arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association in accordance with the provisions of its Commercial Arbitration Rules.
